Nissan - Iyar

It is with some degree of sadness that we wave goodbye to the festive month of Adar. Many of us look forward to celebrating this holiday with our families, enjoy the costumes, the revelry, joking, laughter and liberal drinking.

More then anything though, that might be missed about the holiday of Purim is... JOY.

However, joy comes in many varieties. For example, the month of Nissan brings us the joy and celebration of the freedom and deliverance expressed through the Passover holiday. Pesach is the embodiment of joy. It is also a different kind of joy.

The joy of Purim is basically that of the partying atmosphere, the freedom of want and worry. The abandonment of responsibilities and self-restraint. However, the joy of Pesach is the joy that comes from exercising ones ability for practicing self-control, purposeful goals, and a joy which requires and instills a sense of duty. Almost the opposite of Purim.

The Hebrew word Nissan is translated as miracle in English. Certainly, Pesach was and is a miracle. This miracle brings us into the month of Iyar or Ziv which means radiance in Hebrew. Although there are no holidays in this month the state of Israel and its founding occurred  in Iyar. Unlike other months Iyar always has only 29 days. Iyar also has the Pesach Sheni or a 2nd Pesach. King Solomon began the construction of the first temple on the first day of Iyar. On the first day of Iyar Moses threw a tree into the water and the water became sweet.  It was during Iyar that the mannah fell to feed the people.

Mission Statement of the Jewish Men's Club of Sussex County

Our goal is to grow, strengthen, unify and service the Jewish Community of Sussex County.  Our belief is that by enhancing our community's  ability to study, pray, and enjoy group-leisure activities, we will thereby be enriching all brethren that request or require our assistance.

Lastly and perhaps most special is that there is a part of the human body which is associated with the month of Iyar. The sages teach us this is the right kidney. The kidneys are considered to have an intellectual function, the Torah teaches that it is the kidneys which counsel a person. Also, Midrash teaches us that Abraham himself was taught the entire Torah by his kidneys. The month of Iyar's association with bodily function is called hirhur, which means reflection or thought.

Spring has sprung...

Reflections

The last year has proven that the foundation of any organization or club which seeks fulfillment and satisfaction in addition to good works is no easy task.

Although there have been some ups and downs in the Jewish Men's Club of Sussex County, we have to pinch ourselves and with some degree of amazement acknowledge the fact that we are still here. That we are still friends. That we are still capable of socializing, sharing, sustaining the brotherhood, and enjoying one another's company.

Since spring has sprung it is a good time for the Jewish Men's Club of Sussex County to spring into action and demonstrate what the word mitzvoh really means.
